TALK: Clowning & the Courage To Be

TALK: Clowning & the Courage To Be

A talk by Vivian Gladwell, founder and director of Nose to Nose Clowning.

Clowning is a state of playfulness that brings us to experience a child-like, naïve and vulnerable state of being. Paradoxically we grow, learn and are strengthened through reconnecting playfully with what makes us most vulnerable. In this talk, Vivian Gladwell will describe his approach to clowning, which he does not see as a technique (tricks, gags and routines) but a personal journey towards finding one’s own unique way of being a clown, by listening and being receptive – these provide essential skills for any creative and imaginative expression. It is only when we let go our control over things that we begin to be surprised by the depth of what reveals itself to us.

The word “courage” comes from a root that means “heart.” Through clowning and connecting to our playful spirit we can develop and sustain, in ourselves and each other, the heart to be who we truly are, to trust life and ourselves. “Taking heart” is a profoundly inward process, and an invitation for overcoming the fears that block us from being fully present in the here and now.

Vivan Gladwell: is the founder and director of Nose to Nose and has given hundreds of workshops around the world. He lives both in the UK and France where he started clowning in 1978. He speaks French and English fluently. Vivian began teaching in 1988 as part of the Lifeways Festival at Emerson College. He trained as a facilitator with the Bataclown in 1990 and joined their team in 1991, also working as a modern-day Court Jester. He created Nose to Nose UK in 1990 and since then has gone on to set up Nose to Nose trainings in North America, Germany and Italy. He sees clowning as a social playground for exploring our humanity.
