WEEKEND WORKSHOP: The Geometry of the Topkapi Scroll

WEEKEND WORKSHOP: The Geometry of the Topkapi Scroll

Exploring Islamic Geometric Design from around the world with Daniel Docherty and Ameet Hindocha.

Daniel Docherty and Ameet Hindocha will introduce course participants to patterns from the Timurid pattern scroll known as the Topkapi Scroll, exploring patterns and principles that exemplify the genius, skill and devotion of the geometers and craftsmen - the Pattern Masters - who produced them.

Only recently discovered (1986) and now housed in the Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul, Turkey, the scroll is approximately a foot wide and nearly 100 feet long! Many of the 114 patterns depicted can be found as tilings adorning mosque walls and domes built during the period of the Timurid dynasty (10th-16th Centuries).

The scroll includes examples of five/tenfold girih tiling possibilities such as those found at the shrine of Darb-e Imam, Isfahan. It is a veritable treasure trove of pattern inspiration as participants will discover during this two day course.
