In 2009, there are four key funding needs to build the Emerson College ‘Bridge to the 21st Century'.

1. General Donations:
Unrestricted gifts are very important at this time. The college faces a high level of externally driven change and new regulatory requirements. Unrestricted gifts give Emerson the operating flexibility to make efficient use of resources in a rapidly changing environment. For example, the college must spend close to £100,000 on updated fire safety requirements – a major unforeseen cost. Meeting new requirements of the British Home Office will require re-distribution of available resources and personnel. In this environment, the flexibility of unrestricted gifts is valuable indeed.

2. Rachel Carson Centre:
The Centre is a substantial commitment to take biodynamic agriculture to a new level at the college: charitable gifts will renew and expand the college garden, purchase needed equipment, erect a large greenhouse (£15,000 to go!) for year round work, and expand the garden’s educational role. We intend to build a training kitchen (£40,000) and develop an exciting series of biodynamic cooking and nutrition courses. The current biodynamic course has 30 students and great potential to grow further and connect with students who share concern for agriculture, ecology and sustainability issues.

3. Facilities renovations:
Critical renovations are needed across the campus. Two urgent priorities are to restore the central courtyard between Pixton and Ruskin and upgrade the Pixton heating system. These improvements will have a strong positive impact on the aesthetics and public face of Emerson and contribute towards the comfort of all students and guests.

4. Bursaries
Support for bursaries remains a vital human support for students from across the globe to find the next step in their personal and professional destiny at Emerson College

Recently we have had two wonderful gifts – £45,000 to support purchase of a greenhouse for the Rachel Carson Centre and £25,000 to support renovations of Ruskin Hall.
