The Secrets of Portrait Painting
Looking at several images of the same face, we soon realise there is no such thing as "a" good likeness - only a particular aspect at a given moment in time. Yet we know this person even when it is merely a partial glimpse, perhaps from a distance. Through light & shade we will see beyond unnecessary detail in uncovering general elements common to any face and then allow their own unique proportions, and light within, to emerge step by step from the page. Colour presents us with a soul mood for our characters, as well as flesh tones; and creates a dialogue between what we recognise as much in ourselves as others.
This workshop suits painters at any level as the emphasis is on finding our own relationship with colour & form and developing the confidence to be open to whatever may come. We will also be visiting the Portrait Gallery in London.
